Backstory
In recent years, China Unicom International has been trying to enter the overseas market through the Internet, and after finally determining the plan of cooperation search marketing with YouFind, it took only half a year to increase overseas sales by 52 times, and the effect far exceeded expectations, which made a good paving for the company’s next stage of global sales.
Today, I would like to share with you the stories of the cooperation between China Unicom and YouFind.
Opportunities and challenges
When China Unicom first began to expand its global business, it faced a number of challenges, including the high barrier to entry in the telecommunications industry, the low foreign visibility of the brand, and the limited marketing budget that made it unable to cope with the multiple simultaneously growing markets.
Under various challenges, the Group noticed that travel WiFi is a popular search term and the market threshold in various districts is relatively low, so it decided to plan to develop the travel WiFi market.
China Unicom then launched an advertising campaign to promote cheaper travel network cards as an alternative to portable WiFi. Considering that overseas Chinese are more familiar with the China Unicom brand, the Group decided to focus on the Asian and American markets, as 86% of overseas Chinese live in these two regions.
China Unicom is trying to launch a travel SIM advertising campaign in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Japan and the United States. Since many consumers are accustomed to looking for product information online before making a purchase, the Group plans to bring out positive reviews in search results to influence consumers’ purchase decisions.
In terms of advertising costs, search engine marketing (SEM) is far more cost-effective than traditional advertising. The Group also adopted a remarketing strategy to attract new customers of the Travel Network SIM card to other telecommunication services.
Against this backdrop, YouFind decided to focus exclusively on search engine optimization (SEO) and managing online reviews to create impactful search results for its clients: when netizens use keyword search to find information about travel network cards online, it is not difficult to find positive reviews and comparisons of China Unicom network cards on major forums.
To ensure smooth payments, the Group has added PayPal as an alternative to major payment methods such as Visa, MasterCard and UnionPay. China Unicom has also opened an Alibaba store, working with salespeople who are good at local sales to resell network cards to locals. After the end of the campaign, China Unicom’s website traffic and local and overseas travel card sales all increased significantly. Brand awareness has also improved, which can be seen in higher brand search volumes and website revisits.
